I have been thinking more about my wonderful idea of a -1p coin. I thought it would be a brilliant idea until the Steve P and his evil genius spotted a flaw in my plan. It would seem that for it be a change free coin, you would need to have a lot of them at the start of the day to get rid of. Which got me thinking. where would you go for them?
I suppose you would need to go to a bank, but would you ask for -£10 worth of -1p coins? They would have to hand over a ten pound note to negate the negative effect of all those -1p coins.
So you could go into the bank with nothing and come out with a ten pound note and a thousand -1p coins. You have just made money.
But a thousand -1p coins may be too much to carry, so perhaps they would have to invent other denominations of negative currency, like the -10p piece or even a -£5 note,
But what would you do with a -£5 note? You couldn't give it to charity, because that would theoretically be the same as robbing them of a fiver! If you really wanted to give money to charity, you would have to break into the place and steal all there -£5 notes! Quite a dangerous gamble just to donate money.
However, if you were ever robbed of your negative money, you would come out better off! I can imagine that would cut down petty crime. Who's going to mug someone just to end up worse off?
And it would make banking a nightmare! The more you withdrew, the better your bank balance would be!
Negative money? Probably not as much of a good idea as I first thought.
