Last night my OH and I watched a very interesting docudrama on Channel 4. It was "A very British Sex Scandal" relating what it was like to be gay in the 50's and told the story of Peter Wildeblood. It was an excellent TV show- very informative. MY GOD- the law was harsh then. I cannot imagine what it must have been like.
Having said that, in my family (of which we were told not to research into due to certain 'things') I did have a great uncle- Uncle H, that I never knew. When talking to my mum in recent years, she admitted that she suspected he must have been gay (although it was never spoken of). Apparently he had had many run ins with the police and the family covered up for him many times. Once again, it brings it home how difficult it could have been.
By the way- that 'scandal' was not the one referred to in the warning not to uncover my family history!!!
Still it seems horrific that you could get life for falling in love with someone under the guise of 'Buggery'. It's all Bollocks! Is that where the term Buggery Bollocks comes from?
