Derby days: Day 3- Intimidating the Army

by cj592 @ 2006-08-02 - 23:53:58

Wednesday Morning and Another wonderful plate of beans for breakfast- with a side garnish of Egg, sausage, bacon and tomato splash. Plus I ought to mention that the toast consisted of the thinnest bread ever. In fact, to save money, I bet they had bought thin sliced bread and cut every slice in half- just to make it go further. And there was no offer of a refill of Tea or Coffee (Iam making this point now as it will become important tomorrow)
During the day we ddint want to do much, so we mooched around town- visted the Cathedral which was pleasant-but didn't rank as one of our favourite Cathedrals ever. It was functional and the person in charge was pleasant, so we left a donation.
We had lunch overlooking the main area, where the Tourist Information was. The army had set up some tents and a tank and were doing some sort of recruitment drive. WE could see some of the officers trying to engage some Young blokes, who obviously were not interested judging by the way they told them to ..er.. go away. Funnily enough they never approached me for recruitment. Perhaps I was just too intimidating. My OH said it might be due to something else, but I wont repeat it. Still, she seemed to enjoy watching the soldiers. There were plenty of observers as well, some Chavvy young girls and a few camp men seemed to be very interested in private maneouvers.
After lunch, and a bit of shopping we decided to have a rest before the evenings main event; The Friargate ghost Walk, with none other than Felix Junior!
The Ghost walk was very enjoyable and I would recommend it to anyone. What made it successful for me was the enthusiasm that Ed obviously has for the subject. There was plenty of history and stories, and a couple of pub stops. (My OH said it really was a glorified pub crawl- which is OK by me) Plus there was plenty of anecdotes about the Most Haunted team and program which were very interesting. There were a few set up jumps, and one poor guy with glasses nearly jumped out of his skin at one point. After the tour there was a supper and a chance to chat to the host- which for me was one of the best things about the evening. There was some interesting notes about the history of the gaols and the council and plans (or lack of) for the future. I know I paid for the tour but I would like to thank all involved for an enjoyable evening. It made our holiday! :)
By the time it finished it was very late, so we walked back home trying to avoid the drunks and tarts (I was brandishing my umbrella very aggressively- which may be another reason why the army were intimidated by me)
And then to bed- for the last time in that very colourful room.
