Caring for your tie and getting a flatter body as well!

by cj592 @ 2006-03-17 - 23:32:34

Here's some more info. I know you're dying to read it!

Caring for your Tie

A properly cared for tie can last you virtually forever.

Remember a tie is for life, not just for Christmas.

Hang up your ties, it helps take out some of the wrinkles. Knit ties can be stretched when hung, so gently roll them up and store them in a drawer.

Hang ties up on a rack designed for that purpose. Ties slip and twist on hangers, and will probably fall off.

Sounds like they're drunk!

Rolling up the tie from the narrow end first and leaving it for a couple of days will remove wrinkles in the tie.

Storing ties out of the light prevents fading.

But this is unwise for floral ties, as they need light for photosynthesis

For traveling, loosely roll ties and place them inside a pair of socks or use a tie case.

Place them in socks? Why is that listed first before the tie case? As if someone would say "Damn, I've run out of socks, I'm gonna have to use the tie case to store my ties now!"

Cut any loose threads on your tie. Pulling them can do major damage to your tie.

Don't wear the same tie twice in a row, ties need time to return to its normal shape.

Ties need time to recover? Where do they go? Tie Therapy?

Always unknot your tie when you are not wearing it, leaving it knotted can damage the tie and create permanent wrinkles.

So THATS why old men have wrinkles!

To untie your tie, reverse the tying procedure. Pulling the smaller end through the knot can cause the tie to stretch out of shape

Reverse the procedure of putting it on? Does that mean I have to stand behind the mirror?

Don't wad up your tie, it twists the lining inside of the tie and damages it.

Steam your ties, try to avoid ironing your tie. Hard ironing flattens the body and can cause the material to shine.

now I know how to get a flatter body! Hard ironing! ;)

To steam your tie, hang it in the bathroom when showering or hold your tie over a boiling pot of water(don't let the tie touch the water) on the stove to steam out the wrinkles.

I'm sure that will go down well in the kitchen whilst the wife is trying to boil cabbage

If you find it necessary to iron the tie, cover it with a cotton cloth to protect the fabric then iron it on a low setting.

Do not wash your tie, most ties will shrink unevenly when washed in water due to different shrink rates of the various materials inside of the tie.

Do not bring your tie to commercial dry cleaners,....

... they will only get jealous of your taste....

....when ties are pressed the inside "gum" of the tie becomes damaged and silk ties will lose their luster

Be careful not to get any cologne on your tie when putting it on, cologne can damage the color of ties.

Not to mention that it will make you smell like a pimp!

Do not rub stains, it causes fabric abrasion and loss of color, instead blot the affected region.

If there is a stain on your tie, blot the area and let it dry, then gently scrape the surface with your fingernail or rub the small end of the tie on the stain.

What if the stain is ON the small end?

More serious stains can be removed with spot remover or other mild cleaning agents, but test the remover in an inconspicuous area (such as the back of the tie) first to make sure the remover won't damage the tie

Test the remover in an inconspicuous area, somwhere like Swindon then.

Wearing a tie. Crowbar not included

As you know I have a fascination for ties and I have come across this. The guidelines of wearing a tie. Here are the rules with a few added comments of my own

Wearing a Tie

Don't wear clip-on ties.

The front point of your tie should be just long enough to touch the waist of your pants.

So I'm not wearing trousers then

Your tie should be darker than the color of your shirt.

What if I have a black shirt? Should I get a blacker tie?

Avoid wearing ties that are too bright.

probably because it will mean your shirt is even brighter. See above rule.

The general width of a tie is 3.5 inches, this width will not fall out of style.

Damn I've just measured mine. 3.6inches. Thats SOO not in style

The width of a tie should be approximately the same width of the coat's lapel, if the lapel is wide, the tie should be wide and if the lapel is narrow the tie should be narrow.

The knot of the tie should be proportional to the collar, it should not be too big where it spreads the collar or forces it open and it shouldn't be too small that it becomes lost in the collar.

Forcing a collar open? Ties with crowbars?

The color of your tie should not clash with your outfit but the colors should not be so similar that they fade into the suit.

The main color of a patterned tie should complement your suit and the secondary color should pick up your shirt.

Tie: Hey there suit... Nice colour. Wow Shirt What are you doing tonight?

The texture of the tie should go with your outfit, for instance a shiny silk tie should go with a shiny silk shirt and a wool tie should be worn with a wool suit.

Shiny ought to be banned, especially if you are on TV! (Thats a hint, weatherman... you know who you are!)

When wearing a shirt, tie and jacket wear up to a maximum of 2 patterned pieces unless you have a very solid fashion sense and know how to mix and match well.

Very solid fashion sense? That means you dress badly but you dont give a toss!

Tie your tie in front of a mirror.

Make sure your shirt is buttoned up and have the collar up before putting on your tie.

So thats where I've been going wrong!

Keep the knot of the tie tight throughout the tying process.

Except if its too tight you cannae get the large stylish 3.5 inch end through the knot... unless you borrow the crowbar! ;)

Whats up with the weather?? I'm not getting much evidence of Global Warming... Is there such a thing as Global Chilling?

I've got the sniffles. Perhaps I should use my tie as a hanky.

Now. I am a bit peckish. I'm going to snack on something. There is a chocolate biscuit in the Barrel or I could have an apple.

Chocolate Biscuit
..
Apple
..
Chocolate Biscuit
..or
Apple.

Sod it.. I'll roast a chicken instead.

Bye.....
