Whilst I am writing these blogs it occurs to me that I should include some memories from the past, for prosperity.
My First Bet.
I am not a gambling man; I have only ever placed one bet in my life. It is not that I have a moral issue with gambling or anything, but it’s just something I’ve never really got round to doing.
That was until two summers ago.
It was coming up to the last match of the season and it was Chelsea v Liverpool and the chances of Liverpool winning were not looking good. So I decided to place a bet. I would place a bet that Chelsea would win the game. That way I thought either way I would be happy; a win/win situation! (It was only afterwards that a friend pointed out that if there were a draw, I would be buggered)
So 9am the next morning I went to the local bookmakers. I have never been in a bookies before but I was surprised to see that there was already a scruffy looking bloke playing the fruit machines. After mentally condemning the man for his gambling habit, I remembered the reason why I was there. I approached the counter clutching my fiver.
Behind the counter was a lady of sorts; blonde, buxom and had a look that could curdle milk. But I approached with confidence, trying to give the air that this was no new venture and I was a hardened gambler.
“I would like to put five pounds on Chelsea winning the game” I said sternly “Please” I added.
“In 90 minutes” The lady said curtly.
Now, you have to remember that I have never been in a bookies before and never placed a bet. For all I knew there were laws and rules that I know nothing about such as age limits, Bet limits or even set times when you were allowed to place a bet. For all I knew, you may only be allowed to place a bet after 10am or before 4pm, so when she said “In 90 minutes” my reply was “Can’t I do it now?”.
She stared at me incredulously for a while and said “You want to place a bet for Chelsea to win in the 90 minutes of the game”.
The lady just looked at me as if I was stupid, and I felt stupid.
I have not placed a bet since.
And even if I do, I won’t go back there.
By the way, Liverpool lost, but at least I had my winnings.
All £11 of it.
